Subject: IMPORTANT: School Closure Notice for Tuesday, Sept. 8 – Hurricane Lowell Safety Information
Dear CKMS Families,
Due to incoming weather from Hurricane Lowell, school will be closed on Tuesday, September 8, 2026. All after-school activities, athletics, and campus programs are also canceled.
The safety of our students, families, and staff is our highest priority. Please take this time to care for your ʻohana, secure your homes, and stay indoors as weather conditions deteriorate. Follow guidance from state and county emergency management officials.
If you are located in a flood zone, low-lying area, or need to evacuate your home, the following official emergency shelters have been opened by the Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross:
- North Shore: Kīlauea Neighborhood Center (2460 Keneke St., Kīlauea)
- Eastside: Kapaʻa Middle School (4867 Olohena Rd., Kapaʻa)
- Central / Līhuʻe: Kauaʻi High School Gym (3577 Lālā Rd., Līhuʻe)
- South Shore: Kalāheo Neighborhood Center (4480 Pāpālina Rd., Kalāheo)
- Westside: Waimea Canyon Middle School (9555 Huakaʻi Rd., Waimea)
Shelter Reminders for Families:
- Emergency shelters provide basic physical protection from the storm, but do not provide cots, bedding, food, or medical supplies. Please bring a personal emergency kit with bedding, non-perishable food, water, prescription medications, hygiene products, and items for young children.
- Household pets are allowed at these locations, but pets must remain crated, and families must bring their own pet food, water, and supplies.
We will keep you updated regarding school operations for Wednesday, September 9, as post-storm safety assessments are completed.
Please stay safe, take care of one another, and keep in touch with family and neighbors.
Aloha and stay safe,
Wendy Schwarze
